Shell House: A Mussel-Inspired Modern Retreat on the Ukrainian Coast

DEARTARCH is always on the lookout for innovative architecture that blends seamlessly with its environment while offering a unique living experience. Enter Shell House, a captivating family recreation center designed by K&B Partners, an architecture and interior design firm led by Kovtun Yuri and Burakov Egor. This stunning project, planned for construction near the sea in Koblevo, Mykolaiv region, Ukraine, draws its inspiration from an unexpected source: the humble mussel.

A Bivalve’s Blueprint: Embracing Nature’s Design

The architects’ vision was to create a modern recreation center suitable for both small and large families. To achieve this, they turned to the mussel, a common mollusk in the region, for its elegant and naturally efficient design. The result is a series of structures that mimic the shape of a bivalve shell, creating a visually striking and structurally sound living space.

Imagine two massive, gracefully curved shells connected by a hinge, forming a single, unique dwelling. This is the core concept of Shell House. Primarily constructed from wood, both in its structural foundation and its decorative outer shell, the building harmonizes with its coastal surroundings, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere.

A Community of Shells: Privacy and Togetherness

The project envisions multiple shell houses clustered together, creating a small community of individual family units. From an aerial perspective, these mussel-inspired cottages appear almost nestled together, their organic shapes blending seamlessly with the landscape. This design not only creates a visually captivating experience but also fosters a sense of community while providing each family with their own private living space.

Each living unit within Shell House is designed to accommodate families of varying sizes, from intimate couples to larger groups of four or more. This versatility makes Shell House an ideal recreation center, offering a unique and comfortable experience for all who visit.
